The Secret
What is the greatest tip for cooking up the best gluten-free grilled cheese?
The secret lies in the way you prepare the grilled cheese. Often people prepare grilled cheese as a complete sandwich and flip it to toast each side. Doing this will prevent you from getting an even crisp and perfect cheese melt. It also takes longer.
Instead, make your grilled cheese open-face and put the two pieces of bread together like a sandwich once they are done cooking.

The other secret? Patience and cooking on low heat. 🙂
What You Need
Our gluten-free grilled cheese is quick and simple. You only need 3 ingredients:
- Bread
- Butter
- Cheese

Bread
Any type of gluten-free bread will work for crafting the world’s greatest gluten-free grilled cheese! For our recipe, we used Canyon Bakehouse Honey White Gluten-Free bread.
Butter
This is where the flavor comes in! Do not skimp on the butter. And yes, butter is gluten-free.
If you are looking for a vegan or dairy-free alternative we recommend using margarine such as Original Buttery Spread by Earth Balance.
The butter helps the grilled cheese to crisp up to be just right!
Cheese
This is where you can really personalize the grilled cheese and make it exactly to your liking!
We will use medium cheddar for this recipe to keep with the classic grilled cheese. Here is a list of other cheeses you may want to try when making your gluten-free grilled cheese:
- Pepper Jack
- Swiss
- Provolone
- Muenster
- Havarti
- Fontina
- Gouda
- American
You can even make your gluten-free grilled cheese with two different types of cheeses!
And if you are looking for a dairy-free, vegan cheese we recommend checking labels closely as many dairy-free kinds of cheese contain wheat. We have found that Violife Mature Cheddar Slices are the best dairy-free cheese for making grilled cheese!
